A Magical Autumn Family Photoshoot at Sligachan, Isle of Skye
There’s something so special about autumn on the Isle of Skye. The light softens, the mountains glow with rusty bracken and golden grasses, and the air feels just that little bit fresher – the kind that makes you want to wrap up warm, hold hands and head out on an adventure together.
This beautiful family session took place at Sligachan, one of my favourite spots for a relaxed, wild and wonderfully Skye photoshoot. Nestled between the majestic peaks of the Black Cuillin and the Red Cuillin, it’s a place that feels both vast and intimate all at once – perfect for families who love the outdoors.
Stomping in Puddles & Skimming Stones
We met on a crisp autumn afternoon, with mist drifting gently around the mountains and the river running clear and lively beneath the old wooden bridge. The family arrived ready for adventure – wellies on, cheeks rosy, and absolutely no hesitation when it came to puddle stomping!
And oh, the puddles! Autumn on Skye doesn’t hold back, and that’s exactly what makes it magical. There’s something wonderfully freeing about letting little ones splash to their hearts’ content while parents laugh along, no worries about muddy trousers or damp sleeves. These are the moments that matter – the real, joy-filled, beautifully imperfect ones.
Down by the water, we paused for a quieter moment, skimming stones across the river. Concentrated faces, determined throws, triumphant cheers when a stone bounced twice… maybe even three times! Mum and Dad joined in too (because why should the kids have all the fun?), and soon we had a gentle family competition underway.
Surrounded by Skye’s Beauty
What I love most about photographing families at Sligachan is how the landscape becomes part of the story. The dramatic peaks rising behind you. The ever-changing Skye sky overhead. The sound of water and wind and laughter all mingling together.
The Isle of Skye in autumn has a palette all of its own – deep greens, burnt oranges, silvery blues. It wraps around families and creates the most incredible backdrop without ever overpowering the connection between you.
We wandered, we chatted, we explored. There was no stiff posing, no pressure to “perform” for the camera. Just gentle guidance, plenty of space to play, and lots of cuddles to keep warm between adventures.
The Magic of a Skye Family Photoshoot
Family sessions like this aren’t about perfect smiles or everyone looking at the camera at the same time. They’re about togetherness. About capturing the way your little one reaches for your hand. The way you instinctively pull them close when the wind picks up. The shared laughter over muddy boots and wobbly stone throws.
Autumn sessions at Sligachan are full of movement and emotion – and that’s exactly how I love to photograph families. Natural, relaxed and deeply connected.
If you’re dreaming of your own Skye adventure – puddle stomping, stone skimming, mountain gazing and all – I’d love to help you tell your story in this beautiful corner of Scotland.
Because one day, when those wellies are outgrown and the puddles don’t seem quite so exciting, these photographs will take you right back to the laughter, the wild air, and the magic of being together on Skye.
